Last week, African leaders elected H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf as the new Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC). His election comes at a crucial time for Africa, as the continent faces security challenges, decreasing foreign aid, the shift to cleaner energy, and a low volume of intra-African trade. His leadership would need to focus on urgent reforms to strengthen trade and drive economic growth for the continent.
✅ Economic Independence: Despite vast mineral reserves, many African nations still export raw materials with little local value addition. To build self-sufficiency:
📌 Promote Domestic Resource Mobilisation: Ethiopia’s Grand Renaissance Dam and the LAPSSET Corridor projects highlight Africa ability to fund its own development.
📌 Enhance Local Processing: Côte d’Ivoire’s investment in chocolate production and Kenya’s leather industry demonstrates the value of moving up the global supply chain.
📌 Negotiate Better Trade Terms for the continent: Zambia’s renegotiation of mining contracts to retain more revenue is a model for securing fairer global agreements.
✅Strengthening Regional Blocs: Overlapping economic blocs within the ECOWAS, SADC, EAC, and IGAD hinder Africa’s integration. The recent formation of the Alliance of Sahel States adds further complexity to the AU’s broader integration agenda
📌Realign regional infrastructure by uniting existing blocs and harmonising trade policies for seamless economic integration.
✅ Boosting Intra-African Trade: Despite the AfCFTA creating a $3.4 trillion market, intra-African trade remains low. To change this:
📌 Accelerate AfCFTA implementation by eliminating non-tariff barriers and creating clear trade roadmaps to boost intercontinental trade.
📌 Invest in infrastructure by expanding existing roads and enhancing ports and railways infrastructure to facilitate seamless trade.
✅ African Credit Rating Agency (AfCRA) and a Unified African Currency: To strengthen Africa’s financial credibility:
📌 Promote continental buy-in by ensuring trust and support for the newly established AfCRA’s ratings.
📌 Build strategic partnerships by engaging global financial institutions to enhance credibility and develop local expertise to strengthen Africa’s financial systems.
✅ Enhancing Africa’s Global Standing: For Africa to attract investment and influence policies:
📌 Ensure transparent governance by strengthening accountability and reducing corruption and drive a new narrative by showcasing Africa’s resilience and economic potential.
As Africa’s economic future unfolds, ETK remains committed to facilitating sustainable trade partnerships across the continent.
Congratulations to H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf. May Africa become more peaceful, united, and prosperous under your leadership.
